Chateau Mercian is the oldest established winery in Japan, starting out in 1870. This wine is made from Koshu, Japan’s indigenous grape which can be traced back to 1186 when it was discovered growing wild at Katsunama in Yamanashi prefecture. The Chateau’s slogan is ‘bringing Koshu wine to the world’ and their main goal is to improve the quality and diversity of Koshu.
It has a rich aroma of fresh fruits such as white peach and pink grapefruit with an edge of citrus zing. With it’s time spent on lees, it brings out some palate weight which is balanced with it’s refreshing acidity. Think Muscadet played on the black keys.
It pairs well with grilled fish, vegetable tempura and tofu grilled with yuzu miso.
