The jagged limestone peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail jut out of the landscape and tower over the small pretty village of Gigondas – a place that Rupert has always had a great affection for since working a vintage there over 20 years ago.
The jewel in the crown situated in the very south of the appellation is LArgnee. A tiny 1 hectare plot of 130-year-old pre-Phyloxera vines that this has been called the Chambolle of Gigondas by Robert Parkers Wine Advocate, which compares it with some of the finest red Burgundy. A biodynamically farmed plot that is lovingly cared for, this is the wine from Perrin that those in the know hunt down.
Gigondas ‘Vieilles Vignes’ 2021 has been aged for a year and a half in oak Foudres, althoughits balance and elegance shone through in pre-aging barrel tastings. The wine opens with a rich and opulent nose with notes of black olives and dark red cherries, delicately combined with notes of rosewood. There is greatfinesse, precision and intensity which continues on the palate, whichis full bodied, richly fruited with medium acidity and very balanced tannins. Elegant, ample and generous.

“LArgnee has elegance, length and outstanding complexity: on the nose concentrated wood smoke, mulberry, raspberry and blackcurrant aromas mingle with an undertone of spice and pepper following through to white truffle, cassis, herb and cherry liqueur on the palate. This will certainly age easily through to 2035, but treat your wine with care just 1200 bottles a year are produced! Although customers flock to Beaucastel’s Chateauneuf the real cognoscenti (including the team here when buying for their own cellars) buy Perrin’s far rarer and arguably better value single vineyard Gigondas.”
