Chteau Lalande’s AOP Saint-Julien is an outstanding wine that offers a perfect balance of richness and power. From the consistent and often underrated Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien, this gem of a Petit Chteau on the left bank of the Gironde is well worthy of its position between the more famous Chteau Talbot and third growth Chteau Lagrange, of which it was once a part. Since 1964, the winery has been owned by the Meffre family, and today it is managed Jean-Paul and his two sons, Ludovic and Julien.
Chteau Lalande is made up from 55% Cabernet, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and is perfectly situated between Chteaux Talbot and Lagrange (classified in 1855 as fourth and third growths respectively). This enviable position elevates what is in fact a simple petite chteau to something quite special. Grapes are carefully harvested before being destemmed and crushed and transfered to temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Fermentation lasts around 10-15 days, with 7 days maceration. The wine spends 12 months in oak, around 30% of which is new (depending upon the nature of the vintage).
