My wife Edwina is a fourth generation Western Australian. Her ancestors migrated from England and settled in Frankland River in the mid 1800s. They planted the first vines on the banks of the river in 1875. Im a first generation Australian. My uncles and aunts pressed grapes on their farms and in their backyards, and my own family at one time had a small vineyard, its clear where my interest in wine originated. We met in 1994, the same year I graduated with a degree in horticulture. As I was starting my work in wine, we were also embarking on our life journey.

Edwina and I purchased our first parcel of land in Frankland River in 2004 with dreams of planting our own vineyard. It was a small parcel that had originally been part of a large, historic land holding called Riversdale.

A few years later we had the opportunity to buy the neighbouring vineyard, and acres of prime river and vineyard country. We didnt hesitate as we knew its potential. Cherubino Wines began in our spare room in 2005 with the release of one wine.

Vineyards

Frankland Riveris inland from the Southern Ocean. The continental climate offers sunny dry days and cold nights. Afternoon sea breezes from the Southern Ocean, known as the Albany Doctor, can drop temperatures dramatically. This diurnal variation delivers vibrant, deep red wines and white wines with freshness and acidity.

Vinification

91.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Touriga Nacional.

Made in a clay cement ovoid tank -a giant “egg” -the lees are continuously forced upward by an internal current resembling a vortex. This gives the wine voluptuousness, purity and texture. Theres no added tannin, acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulphur used throughout the winemaking, andonly a minimal amount at bottling.

Tasting Notes

Cabernet Touriga blends typically combine Cabernet Sauvignon, a well-known varietal with Touriga Nacionel, a Portuguese grape that is know for its intense colour and flavours. The resulting wine is full-bodied with high tannins and acidity, making it ideal for ageing. Rich and full-bodied with firm tannins and good acidity. The nose has notes of dark fruit, blackberry and black cherry, along with hints of spice and tobacco. On the palate, flavours of ripe fruit, chocolate and coffee may be present. The finish should be long and satisfying, with a good balance of tannins and acidity.

This is a great wine for chile con carne or for BBQ meats/root veg.
